There Goes the Neighborhood
The New York City Department of Transportation's Urban Art Program partnered with Staten Island Arts and artist Lisa Dahl to present, "There Goes the Neighborhood," to install a 60’ long banner along a pedestrian walkway outside the St. George Ferry Terminal. Using bright colors to depict a lush neighborhood scene, the banner converts a non-descript concrete wall below an underpass into a more inviting space. By deconstructing the form of the house, Dahl explores the traditional notion of home ownership and the feelings evoked by the word "home." Her use of drip painting to mask the façade of each home, references natural disasters impacting Staten Island neighborhoods.
