The Downtown Alliance and the New York City Department of Transportation have collaborated to transform a public plaza in lower Manhattan with the Double Doily, a visually enticing, yet functional piece of art. Commuters and tourists visiting the area are invited into the plaza to sit and relax on the bench. The intricate pattern, laser cut into the metal, improves the aesthetics of the surrounding area. Through her public artwork, artist Jennifer Cecere aims to integrate the flavor of domestic handiwork into the built environment. She feels it is important to provide a feeling of handmade craft like the doily into the city where almost everything within the cityscape is machine made.
