Cara Lynch, The Heart's Best Feelings Gather Home
The New York City Department of Transportation, New York Cares and the Mayor's Community Affairs Unit organized two Barrier Beautification events on Saturday, October 13th. Brooklyn-based interdisciplinary artist Cara Lynch beautified 1,200 feet of concrete barriers along Flushing Avenue in Brooklyn with the support from fifty volunteers. "The Heart's Best Feelings Gather Home" was inspired by 18thand 19th century wallpaper patterns. This barrier design juxtaposes traditional wallpaper patterns typically located within the interior of the home with the chaotic, urban environment. The protective quality of wallpaper is also paralleled with the protective nature of the concrete barrier whose function is to shield pedestrians and cyclists from vehicular traffic.
Special thanks to Graffiti Free NYC for priming the site.
