on.nyc.gov/landlease - NYCHA provided its first overview on its proposal to lease land sites for low-income and market-rate housing to Campos Plaza residents. Commissioner Margarita López presented along with NYCHA Real Estate and Development staff, with assistance from Spanish, Russian, Chinese, and sign language interpreters. More than 100 residents were in attendance and were largely engaged in the question and answer period that continued long past its allotted time. Campos Plaza Resident Association President Dereese Huff shared with residents that NYCHA’s plan to generate revenue by developing on its land is necessary in order to ensure that needed building improvements and repairs at NYCHA buildings, including Campos—where the capital need is over $27 million—can be addressed. Also in attendance were City Council Member Rosie Mendez; representatives from Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney’s office; and local advocates such as the Good Old Lower East Side (GOLES) and the Community Service Society. The meeting lasted three hours, with Council Member Mendez afterward encouraging residents to continue to remain engaged and share their thoughts.
