To celebrate Arbor Day on April 29, 2011, the New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) welcomed a number of partners to Justice Sonia Sotomayor Houses in the Bronx to bring some green to the development. Together, MillionTreesNYC, a partnership between the New York Restoration Project (NYRP) and the New York City Department of Parks & Recreation; students from NYRP’s education program; and local NYCHA residents planted trees at the development in an effort to promote clean air and neighborhood beatification. NYCHA Chairman John B. Rhea and Commissioner Margarita López attended the tree-planting festivities alongside famed multi-talented entertainer and NYRP founder, Bette Midler; “Good Morning America” weather anchor Sam Champion; and Parks Department Commissioner Adrian Benepe. MillionTreesNYC is a citywide, public-private program with an ambitious goal to plant and care for one million new trees across the City's five boroughs by 2017.
