Velvet Worm (i)
Tasmanipatus barretti (Giant Velvet Worm) found in a rotting log in northeast Tasmania.
It's not every day that you get to meet a completely new phyla of organisms so this was an incredibly cool treat. I've read about velvet worms in books and seen them in nature documentaries but to see one for real is just fantastic.
Velvet worms are very cool bugs. Active predators they lie somewhere between Arthropods and nematode worms.
This species is listed as rare under Tasmanain state legislation and is restricted to a range of 600km squared in the north east corner of the state.
Very very very cool!
