Bad hair day

Newer Older

Notomithrax (Decorator Crab) species, possibly Notomithrax ursus found on the Tessellated Pavement, Eaglehawk Neck, Tasmania. This guy is interesting in comparison to the first specimen I found at Goat Beach as he's only really weeded up the top half of his carpace. This reveals the hairs into which the crab weaves it's camouflage.
UPDATE: I initially though this was Naxia tumida but according to Australian Marine Life (G.J. Edgar) this is actually a Notomithrax species.

    Goat Beach specimen
    Very angry seaweed
Comparing the two (which isn't easy) I'm thinking these might be different species or perhaps a younger individual?

How cool is that thing. I didn't know there were other creatures that did that, but of course there are. I found a caterpillar that decorates with flowers. My shots are here if your interested.

    Hi Hope
I remember seeing that image but I'd failed to twig that the tufts on it's back were flowers it had placed there!
Very cool little caterpillar. Thanks for sharing. :-)
