    Northern Elephant Seal (Mirounga angustirostris)

On my day off I went up to Ano Nuevo State Park (California) to check out the Elephant Seals.

During the summer, its mostly subadults who have returned to molt their fur.

Apparently the best time to visit is the early winter when the big adult males (14 to 16 feet long and weighing up to 2 1/2 tons) are fighting for the females.

      Incredible! How close were you?

There is a boardwalk that takes you close to where the seals haul out. A group of seals had dug a small pit just in front of the view area on the boardwalk. So to answer your question: 6 feet!!

Thanks everyone. If you visit Ano Nuevo you can get very close to the Elephant Seals via a boardwalk. In the winter you can a get a guided tour (reservations required) that takes you close to the males (13ft/4m long and 4400lb/2000kg!) as they compete for the females
