Scilla cydonia

Scilla cydonia Speta (Hyacinthaceae). Location: USA, Missouri, St. Louis, in cultivation. Date: 11 March 2006.

Endemic to the Greek islands of Crete and Karpathos, Scilla cydonia is a member of the widespread Scilla bifolia complex. This particular plant originally came from the valley between Ano Kefala and Sembronas in W Crete. Somehow this delicate little squill survives the winters in St. Louis, where temperatures may fall to -18°C (0°F).
