Cullunghutti Aboriginal Area: The First Step

The artist of this work Noel Wellington tells us:

This banner represents the spiritual and cultural role of

Cullunghutti (Coolangatta Mountain).

The mountain is known to our Aboriginal people of the area as a stepping off place to the afterlife. If you were good you would slide down the mountain and out towards the sea to the afterlife. But if you were bad you wouldn’t get past the fire.

The logs reflect on the Aboriginal history of tree scarring (muttima).

This area is a place where our Aboriginal ancestors travelled long distances to come together for ceremonies and rituals.

I believe our Aboriginal people are still practicing this ritual of coming together by going, every year, to the biggest Aboriginal football knockout there is.
