Geomorphologic Mapping-Hurricane Sandy
Prior to Hurricane Sandy, as part of the National Park Service Inventory and Monitoring Program, the NPS Geologic Division in collaboration with Rutgers University, had developed geomorphologic maps for three Northeast Region coastal National Parks, Gateway NRA, Assateague Island NS, and Fire Island NS. At the time of the storm, these maps were in the final stages of review and publication.
Following the storm, Rutgers University was funded to produce post-Sandy Geomorphological Maps for the three parks, and to quantify the dimensions of change to the variety of landform features in the parks caused by the storm. This project will provide crucial information to the scientific understanding of the evolution of park coastal geomorphology, and it will contribute to the scientific foundation for resource-management decision-making.
