Star Burst Polar Graph

Star Burst is another puzzle I sent to an exhaustive search routine. The total number cells visited before getting a solution was 155,493. This graph shows the first 10,000 and last 5000 cells visited. The spoke at 10:00 indicates the puzzle was nearly filled with numbers but one of the first values placed was wrong. The pointer had to travel all the way back to the 2nd cell again, and then make another final thrust to 80th cell for the solution (the 1st and 81st cells are givens).

Another sudoku which takes extremelly long to solve by an exhaustive search is the following:

---------

-----3-85

--1-2----

---5-7---

--4---1--

-9-------

5------73

--2-1----

----4---9

with a brute-force solver working from left to right, and from top to bottom, the run of blank cells at the top takes a long time to fill. My HP Pavilion (133MHz) ran for about 6 hours before the solution was found! (But its an easy puzzle when done by hand)
