Kesawan is one of the oldest area in Medan that located in the west district of Medan. Before 1880 the village of Kesawan inhabited by the Malay people, but then the Chinese from Malacca and China to come and settle in this area so that Kesawan into a Chinatown. After a major fire engulfed the wooden houses Kesawan in 1889, the residents are Chinese then began to build two-storey shophouses which partly remains until today. In this area, you can find many historical buildings, such as this old and abandoned building that nowaday called as "Gedung Ampi". In the colonial time, this old building was the biggest and most complete shopping center in Medan.
