i had a match, but she had a lighter
i had a flame, but she had a fire
i was bright, but she was much brighter
i was high, but she was the sky
For me, this song has a meaning that has nothing to do with the song itself. In 2003, my sister and I took a trip to Vegas. She was 18, I was 22, and we were both going through some pretty big transitions...life changing stuff had happened, and both of us were at a turning point in our lives. It was late January, and we were driving back to my mom's house in Riverside. We were coming out of the Cajon Pass and it was snowing, which was highly unusual. We looked at each other, and just had this perfect moment in time...neither of us knew what the hell we were doing with our lives but in that one moment, we knew that despite all of our (legendary) fights, the crap we were both dealing with, and feeling kind of like we were wandering through life, we were there TOGETHER. This song was playing, and we were singing along.
4 years later, we sat across from each other in a bar in Jacksonville Beach, FL, listening to a local band play some covers, having a mellow evening. The band starting playing this song, and my sister & I just looked at each other and smiled.
6 years have passed since that trip to Vegas, and we've both managed to end up on the other side of the country, in completely different situations than we were facing that night in the car. We're still in this together, though.
I love you, Nina!
