Richard M. Nixon and Checkers
Forced to account for $18,000 in questionable gifts during the 1952 election, vice-presidential nominee Richard M. Nixon insisted to a television audience that the only gift he received was for his children - a Cocker spaniel named Checkers. He won voter's sympathies when he explained, "The kids love the dog ... and were going to keep it."
Lyndon B. Johnson and Yuki
Lyndon B. Johnson's favorite pet was a mutt that his younger daughter, Luci, found abandoned at a Texas gas station on Thanksgiving Day in 1966. Johnson loved to howl with Yuki, named after the Japanese word for snow. In this photo, grandson Patrick Lyndon Nugent watches in wonder.
