Yankee Doodle Dandy
“Yankee Doodle Dandy” James Cagney. By Continental Lithograph Company (active c. 1925-57). Color photolithographic halftone poster, 1942. 195.2 x 197.7 cm (76 7/8 x 77 13/16 in.): Cagney’s well-known face and the implicit reminder of Cohan’s familiar songs, the poster was as heart-stirring as the flags and bunting of a war bond rally, while the high-kicking chorus girls promised a bit more fun. As its size suggests, outdoor advertising grew larger to attract the attention of increasingly faster automobile traffic, eventually the industry standardized the dimensions of the twenty-four-sheet billboard to facilitate national advertising.
