Hell broke loose upon this Protestant City

Museum of London, Aldersgate, London

Here by the permission of Heaven, Hell broke loose upon this Protestant City from the malicious hearts of barbarous Papists, by the hand of their agent Hubert who confessed, and on the Ruines of this place declared the Fact for which he was hanged (vizt) that here began that dredfull fire, which is described and perpetuated on and by the neighbouring Pillar.

Erected Anno 1680 in the Mayoraltie of Sir Patience Ward Kt.

This stone was formerly sited at the spot in Pudding Lane where the Great Fire of 1666 began. It was later removed to the Guildhall, survived the destruction of that building in the Blitz and is now (2018) in the Museum of London. The inscription gives an insight into the extreme protestant fundamentalism of the late 17th Century London merchants. During the Fire, it really was believed by many that Catholics or Frenchmen were responsible.
