Paddy Apling

    Runcton Holme, Norfolk

Yesterday, I explored some churches in west Norfolk in the company of Paddy Apling and his amazing camper van. Paddy is one of Norfolk's great characters, an expert on local history and on Norfolk in general, a former Tanks Regiment officer but also a left-wing activist and food scientist who writes fascinating articles on his own website.

Paddy is 84, but insisted on climbing to the top of Downham Market church tower with me. I accused him of showing off, and he smiled.

Nice story - I hope you made him a cup of tea in that superb van?

Paddy has a fridge full of beer - tea wasn't an issue.

Incidentally, there is an interesting feature about Paddy on the Unrepentant Marxist Blog - just scroll down to beneath John Updike :-)

So this is why you are never in when I phone you Grandad! Incidentally – I’m not at all surprised that your fridge is full of beer.. was it your home brew? ;o) x Lou
