    St Ethelbert, East Wretham, Norfolk

    A superlative Victorian church by G E Street, 1865, for the Wyrley Birch family. Street's finest church in East Anglia, it sits away from its village on the edge of the Battle Training Area.

    The village name is pronounced Rett'm.

      Organ pipe painting is a dying art, and this looks like recent work... Is it?

      Normally, I would say no idea, but in this case I do! This was originally done in the 1860s, under the direction of G E Street. At some point (1930s?) it was all painted over in dark brown. When it was repaired about five years ago, the restorers stripped away the paint and redid it in its original colours.
