a donor adores the Christ child

Holy Trinity, Barsham, Suffolk

A superlative rural parish church. The 19th Century restoration here was firstly by Charles Kempe, and then by his assistant Frederick Eden helped by the young Ninian Comper. Anglo-catholicism generally reached East Anglia quite late, but here it was active in the 1860s and 1870s, thanks to the influence of the Suckling family, who presented to the living.

The setting is superb, on the edge of a water meadow, surrounded by trees. It remains one of the loveliest churches in England.
