Chapel of the Holy Spirit, Houghton St Giles, Norfolk
A 1930s extension to the Slipper Chapel, in the Catholic Church's National Shrine of Our Lady complex on the outskirts of Walsingham. It was constructed to overcome the problem of hundreds, often thousands, of pilgrims each day wanting to light a candle. At any time of the day or year, hundreds of candles burn here. The smell is unforgettable, the heat too. The mosaic at the end depicts the day of Pentecost.
