Like 100 years ago, or more...
(NB : ***Tunisia is safe to travel everywhere, tourists wanted !*** ... Just heard it again on the radio : lots of families are depending on tourism to survive and the industry is not doing as well as the other years, so here I tell it again : this beautiful country is as safe (or more) as Europe, its inhabitants are great and the hotels infrastructure for each budget is well developed, on the coast as well as in the deserts... it's time to discover it, while there are no hoards of tourists !)
This is the old Médenine : despite the traffic jams in the centre, there are still some pockets with this strange very ancient mud architecture (fortified granaries, closed by a gate or ksour = plural of "ksar") which has remained unchanged for centuries ; originally each family had its own granary to store cereals etc, forming "ghorfas", ...but this area being in the centre, I have been told that nowadays some people are even living inside these small rooms ! Temperature inside is wonderfully cool.
I prefer this photo in b/w, in the comments you can see colours and some old photos as well.
