Durmuş, July 2011

    Newer Older

Part of the set "troglodytes and squatters in Cappadocia" - and here I really think that the B/W version is better, leaving our imagination free to see the colours (in the comments). Photo taken with a small Ixus camera that I still use once in a while, specially in Cappadocia.

Contrarily to most of the other people in this set, Durmuş is much richer and he has deliberately chosen to live as a sort of hermit in these caves: they are part of his largish plot of land out of town, he likes to be on the spot to water the fruit trees and vegetables ; he is not poor, having built a small pension when he came back from Germany ; he is not single, the father of a large family ; his wife, in poor health, is living most of the time on the coast with one of their daughters and having been living away from his family for decades when in Europe, he is happy on his own : this is his way of retirement, to "cultivate his garden".

    >>>>> You can also see on this other (more ancient) photo, and other photos in the comments : the other cave, inside and outside, where he lived previously on the other side of his "garden".

Another set of great photos. I love the colours and patterns. He has chosen a peaceful way to retire.
