(Istanbul, April 2008)
It could have been taken in any big city, also mine. So many of them sitting near mosques or churches...
This woman told me of her problems : her husband is a "hamal" (= a porter for very heavy goods in the same busy area), they are coming from Malatya in east Turkey, she is new in the street with her little girl who remained asleep while we were talking as she was a bit sick, they have also another 12 years old girl who fortunately is continuing her studies.
Everything is getting more expensive, E. told me : the renting of our flat of course, but specially all the food prices have increased terribly, also the price of the coal to heat us, that's why I'm here - she managed to smile shyly at me but her smile was not that happy, her eyes showed tiredness and after a while I understood that I had to continue my way. (NB : I did not have the impression that this woman was part of a network of beggars and as I wrote, she was new in the streets, not a professional - hopefully, a temporary situation...).
