Hurricane Laura Approaches Gulf Coast

GOES-16 (GOES-East) is monitoring Hurricane Laura in the Gulf of Mexico as it approaches the Upper Texas and southwest Louisiana coasts August 26, 2020.


As of 10:00 a.m. CDT on August 26, Laura was a major category 3 hurricane with sustained winds near 125 mph.


Laura is expected to further strengthen to a category 4 storm on August 26. Catastrophic storm surge, extreme winds and flash flooding along the northwest Gulf Coast are forecast by the National Hurricane Center.


GOES-16 is is providing data to forecasters every minute to track the storm in real time. This rapid image frequency helps forecasters identify the movement of cloud features and provides greater confidence in estimating the center of the storm and its wind speeds.
