Arctic Sea Ice Reaches Likely Annual Minimum-Sept 11, 2015

On September 11, 2015, sea ice in the Arctic most likely reached its minimum extent for year. The minimum ice extent was the fourth lowest since satellite record keeping began in 1979. This image shows the sea ice concentration data from the Special Sensor Microwave Imager/Sounder (SSMIS) sensor on the Defense Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP) satellite, operated by NOAA/NESDIS. A yellow line shows the historical ice edge (median) for September 11. For more information on the Arctic sea ice minimum, please visit the National Snow and Ice Data Center at nsidc.org/news/newsroom/2015-arctic-sea-ice-minimum.
