Palace of the Marquis of Castelo Rodrigo

Cristovão de Moura played an essential diplomatic role during the succession crisis of 1580, where he supported the Spanish king, Filipe II. Proof of that is the promotion of Castelo Rodrigo to condado (county) by Filipe II and then to marquesado (marquessate) by Filipe III. He built his palace in the alçácova, the innermost fortification of the castle.

After the Restauração da Independência (Restauration of Independence), as the palace was a symbol of Spanish rule, it was devastated by the population, resulting in its current state of ruin.
