Map showing the two routes taken to the South Pole from 'A Very Gallant Gentleman'

Many of the expedition team were moved to record their experiences, often a number of years after the event through pressure by family and friends. Bernacchi’s biography of his colleague Oates is a typical example. The books are often illustrated with Ponting’s photographs, Wilson’s drawings and illustrative maps depicting the routes of their adventures.
