Queen and her party witnessing some explosions

Queen Mary with a small party, watching an explosion in the distance. They appear to have paused momentarily to watch this spectacle, and are standing by the roadside at the edge of a grassy field. The party consists of a group of uniformed men and a woman in civilian clothes, possibly a lady-in-waiting. A parked car is just visible on the road. In the distance there are more fields and trees. It is unclear whether this is a controlled explosion or part of the fighting.

Whilst royal visits to the Western Front were conducted well behind the front line, away from the fighting, visits to secure areas of the Front were sometimes organised.
