I'm a non-violence hippy type but she does look cool with her extravagant hat and gun. There should be a hollywood action movie about her life. I could just see Angelina Jolie in the lead role. :)

Well, leaving guns out of it for a moment, the Countess was also a Suffragette; an artist; writer; war correspondent; first ever woman elected to the British parliament (1918) although she didn't take her seat...

She was always one of my heroines but that photo makes me cringe! Between the overdone uniform and the way she handles the gun it would make you question her mindset. She is holding the gun with all the familiarity she apparently had with kitchen implements. I do agree with Sheba78 however, her story would make a cracker of a film because she was a remarkable woman whatever her faults!

Perhaps if she looks a bit ham-fisted with the gun in this photo, it may be more due to the staged nature of a studio portrait, as she was no stranger to guns and certainly would have known how to use them. She's referred to as a "crack shot" in this article...

One thing she had in abundance—-physical courage; with that she was clothed as with a garment.

She would have known that the way she is told (?) to hold the revolver is totally silly.
It is a very odd way to hold it, even just for a pose.

She was indeed a crack shot and could certainly 'hold her own' with a weapon.

apparantly one of her famous quotes of the day was if a woman wants to make a fashion statement today she should carry a gun..SWEET.

Something I take quite a bit of pride in, she was also my great-great-grandmother's cousin.
