Photos taken on a trip to the Kyrgyz Republic with the British Red Cross to see the work of the Kyrgyz Red Crescent with vulnerable women in the country. We saw three major issues over and over again: lack of knowledge about legal rights and entitlements, abusive relationships and administrative corruption which locked many women across the nation into poverty and exposed them to violence and sickness. The Red Crescent's training not only enables women to stand up and fight back against a failing system which has all but abandoned them, but supports self-help groups in setting up clothing workshops, schools and libraries. Only a few women have passed through the formal training, but the knowledge they spread around their communities is changing the country forever.
This trip will be written up in full for the final of the Guardian International Development Journalism Competition 2009.
