nopaigek (a.k.a. Grungerhelv Mono)

TypeCooker «by style»:

Typeface: Helvetica

As drawn by: Gerard Unger

but as: a grunge face

and: monospaced

It seemed not entirely intuitive to find middle ground between Helvetica and Gerard Unger’s typical stylistic devices, as almost all of his typefaces strike me as quite dynamic (as opposed to Helvetica). I tried to cite the high joins with strong tapers, much white in counters, narrower width; also introduced a bit more contrast to get some of that sharp, texty elegance going that Helvetica just definitely doesn’t have. On the other hand I felt I needed to keep some recognizable Helvetica-isms such as the teardrop “a” bowl, and the structure of the “k”; also the vertical proportions are Helvetica’s and I did try to keep it mostly static in construction despite opening up the apertures. – The result is a strange hybrid, hopefully somewhat reminiscent of both worlds. Oh, and the grunging was fun.
