Joe Jones - Ars Electronica 1988

Fluxus artist Joe Jones (1934-1993) conceptualised solar powered musical instruments in 1964.

But the technology was like science fiction then, and too expensive to make art.

By 1977, he had made solar powered wind chimes, followed by zithers, drums, guitars, toy pianos...

I took these photos of an installation by Joe Jones at Ars Electronica, Linz Austria in 1988.

The installation was a revelation for me - the chaotic, mesmeric cascades of sound within the little hothouse changed dramatically with the changing sunlight - it's often cloudy in Linz.

The solar panels fixed to the music stands pointed directly to the notion that the sun was the conductor of this autonomous orchestra.
