American Kestrel in Profile

Best viewed Large on Black

At about 10 inches (25cm) in length the American Kestrel (aka Sparrow Hawk) is North America's smallest falcon with the Florida population being smaller still. This male is about 7 inches (18cm) long.

I photographed this captive American Kestrel at the Cape Coral Burrowing Owl Festival, a celebration of Cape Coral's official bird - the Burrowing Owl. The annual event offers the opportunity to see a number of animals which have been injured in the wild and have been rehabilitated, but their injuries have prevented them from being returned to the wild.
