Costa Rican Pygmy-Owl

We lucked across this little guy being mobbed by several Gray-tailed Mountain-gems along one of the trails. Fantastic bird!

Nice shot. By the way, this has now been split and is called Costa Rican Pygmy-Owl (Glaucidium costaricanum). It's endemic to the Chiriqui Highlands of Costa Rica & Panama. I once saw one of these with a Streak-breasted Treehunter that it had killed and was getting ready to make a meal out of... pretty cool except I have never seen Streak-breasted Treehunter alive!!!

I have a photo of a streak-breasted treehunter, but would gladly swop the view and sighting for those of this pygmy owl. What a lovely bird. Happy memories!
