2008-06-02 (Toledo, Spain) - 004
Another big batch of Toledo (Spain) photos. The first big highlight here is the big bunch from Santa Maria la Blanca, the oldest synagogue in Spain, and one of the only two remaining in Toledo. (All Jews were forced to convert or leave in the 1400's, and it was several hundred years before any significant number returned. Apparently few, if any, have returned to Toledo.) The architecture is strongly Islamic, as the best folks for the job at the time were Islamic craftsmen. Very cool space with a long and complex history.
The second big batch is from Monasterio de San Juan de los Reyes, a church and monastery constructed by the same monarchs that decided to show all the Jews the door. You couldn't take photos in the church, but the cloisters were beautiful and photo friendly, so there's lots from there.
