Andrena cinerea

    Prev Next

Andrena cinerea male (Hym. Andrenidae) pseudocopulating on a flower of Ophrys sicula (Orchidaceae), 29.iv.2009, Porto Alabe (Sardinia, Italy). The flower has been pinned on a yellow Asteraceae because the males patrol these flowers in search of females. Hence the hypothesis (hiterto untested) is that the yellow border of the orchid flowers "mimic" the visual cues of "rendez-vous" flowers.
