D318844 Hair Ice, Battan Forest

Ice crystals formed on dead wood already saturated with water and then exposed to very low temperatures and high humidity in the air. Almost looks like a white fungal growth but melts to the touch since it is a type of frost but it only forms because of the action of a fungus, Exidiopsis effusa, which needs to be present in the wood. It is a rear phenomenon first observed in 1918 and only linked to the fungus by research published in 2015.
