interesting. I was trying to see an H W T in there someplace but now see 10.

I wonder how decipher-ability might be affected / (aided?) by alternate color choices.

I had done dozens of digital tests, and the blue receded to the background more than most of the other colors I tried. Incidentally, I actually wanted it to teeter on the border of decipher-ability, to force people have to study it a bit. Hopefully it makes the "ah-ha" moment that much more satisfying.

Unlike the poster I did for the Hamilton documentary, which heavily exploits the traditional characteristics of wood type ("distressed" type, ghosting, heavy impression, overprinting, etc), I wanted this one to reference the topic in more of an abstract way (geometric interpretation of traditionally ornate forms, flat solids, left-alignment, pairing black with anything but red, etc). Not surprisingly, it's a lot harder to address such a visually loaded topic as wood type when you opt for a non-literal approach.

I am happy with the result though. Sometimes it feels really nice to just say "fuck it" and whole-heartedly embrace an approach that might not be the most practical.

took me a while to get it, but i think you're right - it is more satisfying when you do, and you do wonder how you didn't see it before.
