I volunteered with others involved with Build a Greener Block for three days at a few abandoned buildings on the corner of Main Street and Charleston Blvd.
We basically transformed the three buildings into a "living community" that included one building being a cafe, coffee shop, community classroom, and green boutique. The sidewalks were lines with colorful recycle bins for plastics, cans, glass, paper and many creative tables/seating constructed of wooden pallets. Trees and plants were donated by Star Nursery for the weekend celebration.
The owner of the buildings has received many calls from potential tenants for the spaces since Build a Greener Block revived the block and opened the possibilities for these buildings. The news is none of them will be demolished and one space already has secured a future tenant!
