John Piper Somerset Place, Bath 1942
Following the devastation of Lubeck in March 1942, the German air force launched a series of 'Baedeker Raids'. These were aimed at British cities known for their historic beauty rather than strategic importance and took their name from a famous German guidebook. Bath was bombed in April and Piper was sent to record the damage right away. The romantic overtones of his depictions are appropriate for a work so concerned with the threat to national cultural heritage.
