Australia Day, IX

Australia Day is the anniversary of the arrival in January 1788 of a convoy of 11 ships carrying convicts expelled from Britain and a company of soldiers to corral them in an antipodean prison. This was the first white settlement of Australia and eventually expropriated almost all the land that the native inhabitants thought that they owned. Not surprisingly, Australians with indigenous ancestry are often unenthusiastic about celebrating.
