066221:Colour photograph of Quayside Newcastle upon Tyne Malcolm Maybury 1998

Type : Photograph Medium : Print-colour Description : Colour photograph taken by Malcolm Maybury in 1998 showing the Quayside Newcastle upon Tyne. The River Tyne and Tyne Bridge are on the left-hand side of the picture and the Blacksmiths' Needle sculpture in the centre of the picture. This photograph looks westwards along the Quayside Newcastle upon Tyne towards the Tyne Bridge. The red-brick and golden sandstone building in the foreground on the right-hand side is the Dickinson Dees office building. The Blacksmiths' Needle is the tall thin cone-like shape in the centre of the photograph. It stands 5 metres high and is 1.3 metres wide at the base. This sculpture was made by artists belonging to the British Association of Blacksmith Artists in 1996 and was commissioned by the Tyne and Wear Development Corporation. It is made from forged iron. It has cast-iron objects welded onto the open metalwork frame with the objects arranged in six sections or bands. The six sections represent the senses including the mysterious sixth sense. There are many different types of objects but many fit within a maritime theme such as seahorses fish and shells.Description and Views Collection : Local Studies Printed Copy : If you would like a printed copy of this image please contact Newcastle Libraries quoting Accession Number : 066221
