Type : Print Medium : Engraving Description : An 1823 engraving of Newcastle upon Tyne. The town is viewed from the ballast hills above the North shore of the River Tyne. People are sitting on the ballast hills in the foreground to the right. There are boats and ships in the River Tyne. All Souls Church can be seen in Gateshead in the centre to the left with the Tyne bridge across the river below. Buildings in Newcastle include All Saints Church St. Nicholas Church and the Castle. The tall narrow shot tower of Elswick Lead Works can be seen in the distance.Description and Views Collection : Local Studies Source of Information : The painting of Newcastle upon Tyne by J.W. Turner was engraved by F. Lupton as Plate 7 of the Rivers of England series. The series was published on 2 June 1813 by W.B. Cooke 9 Soho Square London.
