wow! thats insane. Is the stomach deal normal? (Sense its a deep sea fish, you never know with all the crazy things down there)

I'm guessing that decompression caused the stomach to invert.

Our tour guide Dr Martin Goman didn't give the reason for the distended stomach, but I would assume you are correct carlos.

      Remarkable looking fella isn't he?

They're much smaller than I expected them to be. This is really cool! Thanks for the photograph! I don't think I ever would have realized their size having not seen this photo.

Actually, there are a huge number of different types of anglers, this guy being a typical size. Aparently some species can be as large as a soccer ball, while some (the parasitic male of one species which physically attaches himself to the female for life) are smaller than a split pea!

This is all from my memory of the tour given by Dr Goman. I'm no expert on angler fish :)

I'm rather glad I'll never meet one of those in the wild.
;) Never seen a young one like that before. Nice.

That's an ugly mofo! I always imagined them larger too, probably because they look so menacing. Seeing their actual size make it looks almost comical, like a rabid chihuahua or something.

Mother Nature is a wonderful engineer, to make such beauty and such ugliness, all with the simplest tools :) Even something as butt-ugly as this makes me appreciate the beautiful power of evolution!
