    where the Aral Sea used to be. Taken in Moynaq, Uzbekistan.

    Moynaq looks for all the world like the coastal town it used to be, but disastrous water-management policies over the last fifty years have caused half the Aral Sea to evaporate, and the new shoreline is over the horizon.

      The true scale is not apparent at first glance, but then....oh wow.
      It is by far the best entry in this challenge and deserving of so many more votes (than say the picture postcard image of undamaged dhow).

      This photo makes me want to travel and gets my vote in the Lonely Planet Publications group's Damaged challenge
