2013 Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) Summer Institutes
AVID is a college readiness system for elementary through higher education that is designed to increase school-wide learning and performance with the mission to close the achievement gap by preparing all student for college readiness and success in a global society. AVID supports all children, particularly those with risk factors that are not typically perceived as “college material.”
This is the 25th Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) Summer Institute, and the first year it’s being held in Hawaii. About 1,700 Hawaii educators (about half representing elementary schools and half representing secondary schools) were expected to attend.
About 10 years ago, Campbell High School was the first Hawaii school to start an AVID program. Now, there are 117 participating schools reaching about 11,000 students. Two schools – Campbell High and Washington Middle – are national demonstration sites.
