The Alien at the Sock Hop

    Newer Older

This Martian beamed into a 1950's sock hop. Lucky for him it was a Halloween sock hop.

This reminds me of Fritz Lang's movie Metropolis.

Geez, this is a find! The mask looks like the one worn by a midget in The Man from Planet X, though the costume's completely different.

I've never seen The Man from Planet X, but I just checked out some photos on the net and you're right! I wonder if this might be the actual mask or knock off inspired by the movie? Thanks for posting the info.

You're welcome. I've never actually seen the movie, either, but I've seen stills from it forever...some fly-by-night novelty company might have produced a mask based on the design. A real mystery.

Might have been some sort of publicity appearance for a local theatre or drive-in...

The Man From Planet X (whose head this absolutely is) was also the basis for the Colorforms Men From Outer Space bendy figure "Electron Plus, The Man From Pluto." These figures have a real following and go for a fortune on eBay--2008 is their 40th Anniversary! By the way I've seen the movie and it's terrible and glorious.

I used this image to illustrate a martian invasion.

This photo was taken at Northwestern Naval Academy, which then merged with St. John's Military Academy, to form my old high school: St. John's Northwestern Military Academy. The photo is in several of the archives within our library.
