Northern Red-legged Frog (Rana aurora) DSC_0374
The range of the Northern Red-legged Frog is the U.S. west coastal region from Northern California to southwest British Columbia. Its favored habitat is still to slow moving water: lakes, ditches, ponds, slow moving streams, etc. Northern Red-legged Frogs are considered a Species of Special Concern in California (California Department of Fish and Game, 1999), Sensitive-Vulnerable in Oregon’s Willamette Valley, and Sensitive-Unknown elsewhere in Oregon (Oregon Natural Heritage Program, 1995). I photographed this frog at the bottom of our nearly empty backyard pond while I was cleaning it. Photo opportunities are where you make them.
