Lt. Col. Eckmann with F-16

Lt. Col. Dean Eckmann climbs inot an F-16 fighter jet on Sept. 28, 2006, just as the North Dakota Air National Guard's fighter mission ended. Eckmann was one of the North Dakota National Guard pilots who scrambled from the former Fighter Wing's detachment at Langley Air Force Base, Va., on Sept. 11, 2001, and was soon flying his F-16 fighter jet over the Pentagon. He and other North Dakota Airmen continued to provide combat air patrols for America until the Wing's fighter mission ended in October 2006, at which time the unit transitioned to flying the C-21 Lear jet.
